#1.Gangs of Wasseypur – 2

Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 is at the first place of Nawazuddin Siddiqui best movies list. It was the first film where Nawazuddin Siddiqui is playing the lead role in a Bollywood movie. This was the third film of Nawaz with Anurag Kashyap after Dev. D where he was a guest appearance in a song “Emotional Attyachar” and Black Friday where he was in two scene playing the role of a real person Asgar Mukkdam.  Black Friday was based on Bombay Bomb blast during 1993.  Nawazuddin is playing the son of Sardar Khan (played by Manoj Bajypayee) in the first part of Gangs of Wasseypur.

Gangs of Wasseypur series is a collection of 2 movies of 2.5 hours long each. Gangs of Wasseypur cast many newcomers like Huma Qureshi, Rajkumar Rao, Vineet Kumar Singh, Richa Chadha and Zeishan Quadri. The original idea of the film is given by Zeishan where he belongs to, and Brazillian crime drama “City of God” influenced him. Two of the scene of GOW-2 with Huma Qureshi was written based on the real-life incident of Nawaz.

#2.Raman Raghav 2.0

Raman Raghav 2.0 was Nawazuddin’s first film in 2016, playing the title role of Raman Raghav. Raman Raghav is based on the real life of  Raman Raghav, a brutal serial killer of 1960s. Anurag Kashyap initially wanted to make a period film about Raman Raghav, but after the commercial failure of Bombay Velvet (2015) which was also set in the 1960s, he realized that he would be unable to find funds. Raman Raghav also was known as Sindhi Talwai, the real serial killer active in the mid-60s.

Raghav went on a killing spree over three years in the 1960s, including rape and murder of his sister. It created a spell of fear over the city. Nawazuddin prepared that role for two months keeping him aside from the real world. The film also cast Vicky Kaushal as ACP Raghav, who has similar behavior as Raman. The only difference between Raman and Raghav was the cop uniform.

In an interview with Anupama Chopra, Nawazuddin said that he doesn’t like to play too actual characters in movies.  There was a scene where he brutally kills his sister, is one of the most memorable scenes of Nawazuddin Siddiqui movie list, and he was well praised for that scene.

#3.Manjhi- The Mountain

Manjhi- The Mountain was the first movie of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, where he played a positive lead character. This film was based on the life of a real person Dashrath Manjhi. Manjhi, widely known as the “Mountain Man”, was a poor laborer in Gehlaur village, Gaya in Bihar, India, who carved a path 9.1 meters (30 ft) wide and 110 meters (360 ft) long through a hill 7.6 meters (25 ft) using only a hammer and chisel.

The film cast Nawaz and Radhika Apte in the lead, where Radhika Apte played the role of Dashrath’s wife “Fagunia”. Viacom 18 and NDFC combined production Manjhi was leaked on internet few weeks before it’s release, Manjhi was released Tax-free in Bihar with a universal certified by CBFC and turn out to be a profitable film in North India.

Manjhi died in 2007, Nawaz played a role in different lifespan. The film’s postscript states that 52 years after he started breaking the mountain, 30 years after he finished and 4 years after his death the government finally made a metalled road to Gehlaur in 2011.

Directed by debutant director Shlok Sharma, Haraamkhor is one more negative portrayal of Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Nawazuddin Siddiqui movie list. Haraamkhor released in the same month the same year when Raees released. Raees released with a massive number of screens and took an opening of 17 Crore in Domestic Box Office while Haramkhor released in a minimal number of screens and also made in a very less budget of 2 Crore INR. This was the second time when Nawazuddin Siqqidui is playing a role of school teacher, and The first time was a Doordarshan’s Television series “Parsai Kehti Hain”. The first movie of Kabir Khan with Nawazuddin Siddiqui was New York. After a long struggling career, at that time New York has the most number of screentime of Nawazuddin movies. However, still, he was unnoticed in front of other good performance by actors like John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh, and Irfaan Khan. Sriram Raghavan fourth directorial film after the failure of Agent Vinod, coming back to his favorite neo-noir genre where he is is master in it. The film was nominated for Best Film in the 61st Filmfare Awards, as well as some other categories like music which was well received early. The movie is based on the Italian novel Death’s Dark Abyss by Massimo Carlotto. The film was given an A certificate due to it’s violent and sexual content. The film has an alternate UA rated version of the film doesn’t contain following scenes: Huma Qureshi’s intro song and her abused scene, one hammer hitting scene, Radhika Apte’s bedroom stripping scene, lovemaking scene of Nawaz, the kiss between Varun and Divya Dutt, along with few cuts in audio as well for it’s strong matured language.

This is the third film collaboration of Nawazuddin Siddique and Huma Qureshi, they co-starred in Gangs of Wasseypur-2(2012), and Shorts(2012) both are Anurag Kashyap’s film. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Varun Dhawan both had a dominant role in the film, but Nawazuddin Siddiqui took most of the credits. There was a scene where Varun copied and trolled Nawaz quotes, that was one of the humorous scenes of the dark film. Badlapur is rated 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

#8.Talaash

Reema Kagti’s Talaash is a tale of love lost, fatal attraction, supernatural elements do exist and above all the quest to solve a perfect crime. Suspense at its core, Talaash explores Mumbai’s underbelly like never before from it’s cops, cops relations to others to prostitutes in the streets. Aamir Khan plays an investigation officer, Inspector Shekhawat who receives a phone call early in the morning informing him about death and an accident and how everything starts to unfold from there. Above from its matured content, the film is very beautifully treated.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s character is called Tehmur and walks with a limp, a reference to Timur the Lame (also known as Tamerlane and Tamburlaine), a prominent Mongol conqueror of the 14th Century and an ancestor to the Mughal Dynasty who would rule India from the 16th – 18th century. Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s character name  Teimur is the name of Kareena Kapoor Khan’s real-life son.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui has worked with Aamir Khan twice, in Sarfarosh (1999) and Talaash (2012). Sarfarosh was Nawazuddin’s debut film, which was his roommate is about to do and also in Aamir Khan’s production Peepli Live. Talaash receives a positive response from Domestic and Overseas critics, but some viewers don’t like it for the supernatural element still won many awards including Nawaz won his first National Award.

Note: The film was earlier titled Dhuaan and then Act of Murder then Zakhmi.

Many of the viewers of this movie, didn’t know Nawazuddin Siddiqui is in the film. Nawaazuddin Siddique spots an entirely different look from all his films. He is in a very pivotal role of private detective D.K aka Daya Shankar Kapoor. Mom is one of the best thriller movies of recent time based on a social backdrop.  Mom is the most pan India film of Nawazuddin Siddiqui which is also available in other three languages Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam.

Moreover, Sridevi has landed her voice for all the languages, and later she won National Award for Best Actress. Nawaazuddin Siddique said he signed the film as he wanted to work with Sridevi. Mom was later released in other languages including Russian with the same reception.

#10.Peepli Live

Peepli Live is an Indian satirical comedy film that explores the topic of “farmer suicides” and the subsequent media and political response, produced by Bollywood Actor Aamir Khan and directed by Anusha Rizvi. Peepli Live was India’s official entry for the 83rd Academy Awards Best Foreign Film category. However, it did not get nominated.
The story of the film is about a farmer “Natha” and his brother in a fictional state in India called “Mukhya Pradesh”.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui played a role of local reporter “Rajesh” in his village with larger dreams. When Natha decided to commit suicide by order of his brother, Rajesh was the first one to cover up his news, later became sensational news. In the end, Rajesh (Nawazuddin) discovers about another farmer Hori Mahto who has sold his farm on an auction, he used to dig up earth from the fallow land and sell in for 20 bucks later he was found in his pit died because of hunger, Nawazuddin Siddiqui ask another journalist Nandita “Is not that important?”. Also, she replied him to saying “Research says audience wanted Natha and moved on”. This scene is one of the great scenes of the film and making Rajesh more lovable and human character in the film.

#11.The Lunchbox

Did You Know which is the highest Bollywood grossing movie in Argentina? This is the movie which collected the highest amount ever in Argentina for any Hindi film. The Lunchbox is the only romantic movie of  Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The three main characters in the film – Saajan (Irrfan Khan), Sheikh (Nawazzudin Siddiqui) and Ila (Nimrat Kaur) – all belong to different religions. Saajan is a Christian, Sheikh is a Muslim, and Ila is a Hindu. The Lunchbox was nominated for the Best Film Not in the English Language category of the British Academy Film Awards 2015. It will not be wrong if I say The Lunchbox is the successful film of this decade.

However, initially, The Lunchbox was not financed enough it was co-produced by Anurag Kashyap, Guneet Mongo, etc. and Irrfan Khan who plays the lead role has taken one-eighth of his remuneration. After its screening in the Film Festival in Cannes, Walt Disney brought the distribution rights. The Lunchbox was one of the most profitable films of the time.

Nawaz is rarely seen in the film promotion, but later in some interviews, he talked about his prep for this role he said his real-life roommate very much influenced the character of Shaikh. The film was jointly produced by various studios including DAR motion pictures, UTV Motion Pictures, Dharma Productions, Sikhya Entertainment, NFDC (India), ROH Films (Germany), ASAP Films (France), and the Cine Mosaic (United States).

#12.Bombay Talkies

Bombay Talkies is a Bollywood anthology film consisting of four short films, directed by Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee, Zoya Akhtar, and Karan Johar. Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s portion was named “Star” directed by Dibaker Banerjee. The whole film was made on a budget of 7 crores and grossing 18 crores.

An adaptation of Satyajit Ray’s short story “Patol Babu, Film Star”. A failed actor Purandar (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is struggling to make a living after his father’s death. He expects others to come to him and offer him work. One day he meets the spirit of his mentor, Sadashiv Amrapurkar and learns the lesson that work is not God’s Gift and one only gets it when one tries, he stumbles upon his last chance to prove himself to the world and more importantly, to his daughter (this last point is adapted from another of  Satyajit Ray’s short stories, “Pterodactyl-er Dim”). The film was made like 100 years of tribute to Indian cinema. The recently released Netflix Original “Lust Stories” is reported to be the sequel of “Bombay Talkies”, directed by the same bunch of directors which doesn’t cast Nawazuddin Siddiqui but cast his co-stars and friend Radhika Apte and Vicky Kaushal in the different short film.

#13.Monsoon Shootout

If you love Hollywood sci-fi psychological dramas than you must see how Indian Filmmakers are trying. The story of “Monsoon Shootout” tells many things like conviction, mistakes and a take on good and evil. The film was confusing for some audiences while some like it for its engaging narrative style. In the film, Nawazuddin plays the main antagonist named Shiva, and he used his particular weapon to kill people. The film has three different parallel space timeline about a cop named Adi played by Vijay Verma. The film is shot in the monsoon season in Mumbai in heavy rains. Just like the movie the youtube trailer has a unique premise where the viewers to take two pills of a shoot and don’t shoot Shiva, which brings audiences to a whole new experience.

The film received positive reviews at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival in the Official Midnight Screenings section. Belonging to the school of Parallel cinema, Monsoon Shootout was released worldwide four years later on December 15, 2017, to positive reviews with a first gross collection of 0.6 crores.

#14.Miss Lovely

Miss Lovely was the first film by portraying lead actor in Bollywood directed by Ashim Ahluwalia. But Ashim started it making as a documentary film about Indian C grade films which is very popular in the 1970s and early 2000 and later became famous as web content. Because of its matured content CBFC certified as “A”.

The stylized form, densely layered narrative, period costumes, and production design simultaneously conveys a pulp style and contemporaneous modernity. Jonathan Romney of Sight & Sound described the film as “A shock to the system – an Indian film like I’d never seen”. The film constantly switches between genre pieces and is part hard-boiled film noir, part love story, part melodrama, and part documentary. It has been compared to some German and Japanese films which are based on some similar true or fictional stories.

The film was screened in Film Festivals such as Cannes, Toronto, and Rotterdam and later released in India theatrically in 300 screens and won 2 National Awards.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is always open to any role, and this was the second time where Nawaz is playing a cop role after Sujoy Ghosh Kahaani, but SP Jaideep in Raees is less intensive than IB Officer Khan. Raees is the second film of Nawaz in the same month after Haraamkhor where he is portraying a school teacher.  From its production, this is the fourth so-called commercial movie in Nawazuddin movie list after Kick, Freaky Ali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. After Raees he did commercial movies like Munna Michael which didn’t work at all.

Raees released with a clash starring Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam in the lead “Kaabil”, both the film collected almost equal in the first day and all time despite mixed word of mouth. Raees was still third highest grossing film after Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Kick, where he played the main antagonist and both the film starring Salman Khan.
Raees became the first blockbuster of the year 2017 after failures from the big production OK Jaanu, Raees was co-produced by Excel Entertainment and Red Chillies. Rahul Dholakia better is known for his previous award-winning Firaaq, where Nawazuddin Siddiqui had played a tiny role. The film production starts from two years before Shahrukh Khan said he would never disrespect to Nawaz character in any scene.
