Deva Das Telugu Movie Review
This is the third film of the director Sriram Aditya after Bhale Manchi Roju and Shamantakamani. And in a similar way like other two films, this Deva Das has strength and weakness from other two movies of Sriram Aditya. The film is of course not a typical Telugu rom-com it’s rather a bromance movie. We had seen Bollywood movies like this release Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety which showcase friendship of two boys but between in same age.
Just like other Sriram movie, this starts with an interesting introduction to all the characters. The film revolves around Deva (played by Nagarjuna), a gangster who comes back to Hyderabad after ten years. A lot has changed in the years of his absence. There’s a threat in the underworld from a new criminal/businessman named David (played by Kunal Kapoor), who wants to grab control of the underworld and mafia.
The other hand, Das (played by Nani) is an honest doctor whose only ambition in his life is to save lives. One day, fortunately, Das saves Deva (played by Nagarjuna) in the medial process, later it leads to the formation of a powerful friendship bond between the two and became Deva-Das. However, an incident separates them and their life goes ups and down and it leads to change their approach in life. What is the conflict and how its resolved is the rest of the movie?
The subplots and unfolding of the characters are quite interesting in the initial point but slows down and later it feels boring. Especially the mafia episodes of Kunal Kapoor is very painful during the watch. One can feel like an add-on unnecessarily and increased the length. The Das and Pooja love story is so shocking in a way, and same case with Deva and Janhvi love story.
For such kind of atypical storyline always has to be strong in writing screenplay and placement of songs. Mani Sharma’s songs are nice and also well choreographed but the placements were not in the right places as per the story is the concern. The scenes between Deva and Das is well written and performed but nothing can compete with this in the film especially the female characters has nothing much to do and took them as a token. The biggest problem with “Deva Das” is structuring the film in direction.
Nagarjuna Akkineni – Deva
Nani – Das
Rashmika Mandanna – Janhvi
Aakanksha Singh – Pooja
The performance of Nag and Nani is really commendable mostly scene which they are in the same frame. But other actors hadn’t given more chance and also seems like they do take these characters seriously. The multi starer genre is very less popular in Telugu which started successfully with Seethama Vakitlo Srimalle Chetu. SVSC assembles Mahesh Babu and Venkatesh but after that, we hadn’t seen such A-list actors coming together.
Two of the females are wasted and rest of the cast is filled with usual Telugu movie faces. Sathya, Naresh, Venu, Murali Sharma, Prudhvi, and Rao Ramesh, who all do satisfies you in the given minor roles. Kunal Kapoor and Vennela Kishore are one more wasted actors and don’t know how they can afford this. After Geetha Govindam and Goodachari, one can’t accept Venela and Rashmika in such characters.
