Gold directed by very matured director Reema Kagti, who previously made the supernatural suspense drama “Talaash”. Gold is the second film of this year loosely based on Hockey. The first half of Gold narrates smoothly, but more about India-Pakistan more than hockey yet Reema makes to engaged the audience by voice over. Akshay played the role of Tapan Das, a fictional manager of Indian Hockey Team during 1948 Olympics.
The story is based on India’s astounding victory in the 1948 Olympics. Gold is the most commercial movie Excel Entertainment have ever produced. The dialogues written by Javed Akhtar are more plus point to the movie. However, if you are expecting Kabir Khan’s Sattar Minute dialogue from 2007 film “Chak De India”, then you are wrong.

Gold Actor’s Performance:
Akshay Kumar in the role of a Bengali married guy doesn’t appeal to the audience because of his accent, somehow he manages to justice as a manager of Indian Hockey Team. Talking about the supporting cast of the film, there are lots of talented actors. Mouni Roy playing the female lead Monobina Das ( Tapan Das wife ) has done an excellent job but nothing much to do and most of the scene slapping Tapan Das. Vineet Kumar Singh as Imtiaz Shah and Kunal Roy Kapoor as Samrat shine in their scenes. Amit Sadh playing in the role of Raghubir Pratap Singh, a productive hockey player is good, but the same attitude we have seen him before in “Kai Po Che” and Amazon Prime Original series “Breathe”.The actor surprised us is Sunny Singh as Himmat Singh, he has some praiseworthy dialogues in the film.
Gold Technical Aspects:
The cinematographer Álvaro Gutiérrez is done an excellent job, he previously worked in Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara. Also, this is a very new challenge for him because it’s a periodic drama and showcasing two countries India and England of 1940s. This film requires a lot of Visual Effects shots, and these scenes are non-tacky visuals. The partition scenes used in the first half and the hockey matches are memorable because of VFX, Production Design, and Cinematography.
Screenplay written by Rajesh Devraj has some dull moments and sometimes trying to be a spoon feed patriotic film, made especially for Independence Day. Music of “Gold” composed by Sachin-Jigar is not up to the mark. None of the song is a chartbuster and don’t make any sense some such the Bengali man Tapan Das after getting drunk he dance on a song “Chad Gayi Hai“. The patriotic song “Jagaa Hindustan“, lyrics were written by Javed Akhtar is commendable.
