Directors like Tinnu Anand, AR Murgadoss, and S.Shankar best known for their vigilante films. #1.Shahenshah

Indian vigilantes are always for justice, so as Shahenshah aka Inspector Vijay Shrivastava. Shahenshah is one of the few vigilante movies of 1980s and only the film which later became a cult. Meenakshi Shesadri playing the love interest of Vijay and Amrish Puri playing the main antagonist makes it a complete package of Bollywood masala film. The theme song of the film “Andheri Raaton Mein” and the dialogue “Rishtey mein hum tumhare baap lagtey hai…Naam hai Shahenshah” remains one of the best things of Bachchan’s career. Jaya Bachchan and Inder Raj Anand wrote the plot of the film. Shahenshah became the second highest grossing film of the year.

#2.Mr India

Shekhar Kapoor, after five Filmfare Award of Masoom. Shekhar came with a script which later became a landmark film. India has produced very few science fiction genre, and Mr. India is the only sci-fi film which works before the 2000s. The film was always remembered for Amrish Puri’s quote “Mogambo Khush Hua,” and the item number did by Sridevi “Hawaa Hawaai”. Mr. India was later remade in Tamil and Kannada starring Bhagyaraj and Ambareesh in the lead respectively. Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan were offered the lead role, but they turned it down as they could not relate with the invisible hero.

#3.Indian

The first official Indian entry for S.Shankar was “Indian” which was released in hindi as Hindustani and Bhataryeedu in Telugu. This was the time when Kamal Hassan was in top of his career and also a National Star after hindi success such as Sagar, Sadma, Ek Duje Ke Liye and Appu Raja. S.Shankar has announced the sequel of Indian , Ajay Devgn playing the lead antagonist. It was also the highest grossing Tamil film upon its release, beating the collections of Rajnikanth starrer Baashha.

#4.Sivaji

The second film S.Shankar in our list of “Top 10 Indian Vigilante Films”, but it was completely different from Indian(Hindustani). Sivaji-The Boss was the first Indian film to gross 100 Crore, later surpassed by Aamir Khan’s Ghajini. Sivaji was a box office blockbuster in Tamil and Telugu languages. However, the Hindi version gets attention on its Television premiere on Star Gold. The dialogue “Jhund Mein Toh Suar Aate Hai, Sher Akela Hi Aata Hai” became the most popular punchline of all time.

#5.Ramanaa

Ramanaa was the second directorial film after Dheena starring Ajith Kumar in the lead. Ramanaa was later remade in Hindi and Telugu starring Akshay Kumar and Chiranjeevi in the lead. Murgadoss won Best Dialogue Writer in Tamil Nadu State Award for Ramanaa. Ramanaa was the first vigilante film made by AR Murgadoss, and later he made Ghajini, Spyder, Kaththi, and Thuppaki also remade in Hindi as Holiday with actors like Aamir Khan, Vijay, Suriya and Mahesh Babu.

#6.Bhavesh Joshi Superhero

Bhavesh Joshi Superhero is a vigilante film directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and written by Anurag Kashyap. Bhavesh Joshi is not like other vigilante films in our list, and it’s more like an art house cinema comparing to other Mass movies. In the trailer launch of the movie, Anurag stated as “Bhavesh Joshi is like a throwback to 80s film”. The story is about the time of revolution started by Anna Hazare and the three guys involved in it. Later, when the bill was not passed, the three guys distattached because of it.

#7.Ungli

Ungli was the first film, which showcases female vigilantism. The film is about 4 friends, working respectful jobs and secretly bullies those guys who are not working for the system. #8.Anniyan

The third film of S.Shankar on our list, Anniyan is a psychological action drama starring Vikram in the lead. Anniyan won National Award for Best Special Effects, one of the departments where Shankar always stands out. Later, Anniyan is released in Hindi as Apparichit, failed at the box office but later became a television classic earning best TRP of that era beating Hindi films like “Don” and “Rang De Basanti”. Anniyan is about Ambi who is frustrated about how citizens of the society following the system and his two alter ego came from his Remo and Anniyan (Apparihit) because of his multiple personality disorder. Apparichit is a much watch vigilante film of all time.

#9.Gentleman

The last and fourth film of S.Shankar in the list of vigilante film. Gentleman is a 1993 heist-vigilante film, or you can say a justice vigilante film, later remade in Hindi as “The Gentleman” starring Telugu actor Chiranjeevi in the lead. Gentleman is a justice vigilante film about the Indian education system. Just like other S.Shankar films Gentleman is much ahead of its time, still was a successful film of its time. The music composed by AR Rahman was still remembered, In Hindi version, Anu Malik reused his tones.

While the mass audience accepts some of the dialogues.
